Dubai is one of the few Gulf cities where a desi kitchen runs at near-home prices. In Satwa, a full Pakistani meal — biryani, roti, tea — costs AED 16 at a restaurant serving it since 1978. At the other end of the same city, one Indian tasting menu costs AED 1,095 a head: 68 times the cafeteria meal. Between them sits the whole ladder of desi eating in Dubai — cafeterias, chains, tiffin services, sweet shops and your own stove.
This article prices that ladder from the restaurants’ and providers’ own published prices — Ravi’s own menu, Student Biryani’s and the tiffin companies’ own websites, named chains’ delivery-platform listings — pulled on 23 October 2026. Where a price comes from a delivery platform rather than the dining room, it is labelled: the two are not the same price, and the first section proves it. Where no source publishes a figure, this article says so and quotes nothing.
How much does a desi meal out cost in Dubai?
At the budget end, a full desi meal out costs AED 15–40 in the cheap-eats districts — Karama, Satwa, Bur Dubai, Deira (Where To Eat Dubai’s 2026 cheap-eats guide). At the best-known cafeteria chain it costs less than the bottom of that band. Ravi Restaurant in Satwa prices a chicken biryani at AED 12 on its own menu; add a roti (AED 1) and a tea (AED 3) and the full meal is AED 16, dining in.
| Dish — Ravi Restaurant (own menu, dine-in) | AED |
|---|---|
| Chicken Biryani | 12 |
| Mutton Biryani | 12 |
| Dal dishes (dal makhni, chana dal, mash dal) | 10–12 |
| Butter Chicken | 16 |
| Chicken Tikka Masala | 13 |
| Tandoori Roti / Chapati / Paratha | 1 |
| Butter Naan / Garlic Naan | 4 |
| Tea / Masala Tea | 3 |
Order the same food for delivery and the price changes. On Ravi’s own Talabat listing (Al Nahda branch), a Mini Chicken Biryani is AED 16.90 list (AED 13.52 discounted) and a Hyderabadi Dum Chicken Biryani AED 31.20 — platform prices, above the dine-in menu for comparable dishes. Every delivery-platform figure here is labelled as one; never compare a platform price with a dining-room price as if they were the same.
The chains price the meal deal, not the dish. Student Biryani (Karama, Al Barsha, Dubai Silicon Oasis) sells a Value Deal on its own website — chicken biryani, shami kabab, raita and a drink — for AED 29; a one-person karahi meal (chicken karahi, 2 naan, salad, raita, drink) is AED 41. Guides report its shelf biryanis at AED 26 (chicken) and AED 30 (mutton) — guide figures, not the chain’s own menu. The cheapest named biryani plate in Dubai comes from a shop that named itself after the price: 10 Dirham Biryani sells a 250 g chicken biryani for AED 10 on its own site (boneless AED 12; a family dum, AED 35).
Puranmal’s Apni Indian Thali — 2 vegetables, dal, 4 chapatis or 2 rotis, rice, raita, papad, pickle, sweet; serves 1–2 — is the set-meal price: AED 44 on its Deliveroo listing (a platform price).
One famous name cannot be priced cleanly, and this article will not pretend otherwise. Karachi Darbar — the Karama name most residents mention first — publishes no priced Dubai menu that could be retrieved. The only two priced sources are third-party menu aggregators, and they contradict each other: HabibiMenus (page last updated well over a year ago) puts starters at AED 5–15, mains at AED 15–30, a full meal at AED 20–40; WithinBeauty (page nearly two years old) puts a Karachi Biryani alone at AED 35–50, karahi at AED 45–70, nihari at AED 40–60. Both cannot be right, so neither is quoted here as its price. Its Friday-morning halwa puri in Karama is documented; its price is published nowhere retrieved.
Breakfast follows the same maths: a halwa puri set at Ravi is about AED 18 (a 2026 Satwa breakfast guide), while a paratha and tea from Ravi’s own menu come to AED 4. Karak chai still costs AED 1–2 at street cafeterias (Social Kandura, 2026), AED 5 list on one Karama cafeteria’s Talabat page, and AED 10/14/16 (small/medium/large) for FiLLi’s Zafran tea on its own store page. One drink, three Dubais.
One seasonal exception, Ramadan only: during Ramadan (in 2026, roughly 18 February to 19 March), Student Biryani’s own site runs iftar bundles — chicken biryani with dates and water, AED 15; with samosas, fruit mix, laban and water added, also AED 15; with a spring roll too, AED 19. Iftar at cafeteria price — for one month of the year.
What do mid-range and premium desi restaurants charge?
A dish, not a deal: at a mid-range sit-down chain, mains run AED 44–63 each, and three mains for two people at Gazebo come to AED 154 — the bottom of what guides quote for a mid-range dinner for two (AED 150–400). At the top, the flagship Indian tasting menu is AED 1,095 a head.
Gazebo, the Indian/Mughlai chain, prices its mains like this on its Deliveroo listing (platform prices): Subzi Masala Biryani AED 44, Murgh Maskawala (butter chicken) AED 47, Gosht Hyderabadi Biryani AED 53, Murgh Hyderabadi Biryani AED 54, Bhuna Gosht AED 55, Murgh Tikka Masala AED 56, Murgh Tikka Biryani AED 59, Boti Hyderabadi Biryani AED 63.
Price a dinner for two from that listing: Murgh Hyderabadi Biryani (54) + Gosht Hyderabadi Biryani (53) + Butter Chicken (47) = AED 154 for three mains — before breads, drinks or dessert. The guide bands for a mid-range meal for two (AED 150–400 across BizInvest, Commitbiz and GoProfiled) bundle those extras in, which is why the menu arithmetic sits at the bottom of the band. Both are shown; neither is merged into the other.
The buffet end cannot be priced from the source: Barbeque Nation (Al Karama, Al Barsha) publishes no official Dubai buffet price in anything retrieved — only a listing range of AED 50–100 a head (Restaurant Guru, Al Barsha, 2026). Treat that range as the only usable figure; there is no official number to quote.
At the top: Trèsind Studio on Palm Jumeirah (three Michelin stars) prices its tasting menu at AED 1,095 a person — two independent 2025 sources agree on the figure. Two other figures in circulation do not survive checking: an old review page quotes “AED 350++” from the restaurant’s previous location era — stale — and a 2026 blog comparison puts it at AED 1,200–1,800 for food alone, matching neither agreeing source. The sister restaurant, Trèsind Dubai at One&Only Royal Mirage, launched its Chef’s Tasting Menu at AED 699 a person (October 2025). Between the tiers, Asha’s at Wafi: guide ranges put mains at roughly AED 60–120 — a guide figure, not a menu.
How much does a desi tiffin service cost per month in Dubai?
Published tiffin plans in Dubai run AED 199–899 a month. For one meal a day, three named providers charge AED 199 (Tayb Meals), AED 250 (MealsKart) and AED 449 (Ghar ki Thali) — a 2.3× spread for what sounds like the same product. Every price is from the provider’s own website.
| Provider | Plan | AED/month | What it works out to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tayb Meals (Kerala, South & North Indian menus) | 1 meal/day | 199 | Own stated cost ≈AED 5–8/meal |
| Tayb Meals | 2 meals/day | 359 | ≈52 meals (Mon–Sat) = AED 6.90 a meal |
| Tayb Meals | 3 meals/day | 459 | As above |
| MealsKart (Kerala / South Indian) | 1 meal/day | 250 | Free delivery; meals/month not stated, so no per-meal figure exists |
| MealsKart | 2 meals/day | 350 | As above |
| MealsKart | 3 meals/day | 450 | As above |
| Ghar ki Thali (pure veg, palm-oil-free) | 1 meal (lunch or dinner) | 449 | 26 meals = AED 17.3/meal (own figure) |
| Ghar ki Thali | 2 meals (lunch & dinner) | 899 | 52 meals = AED 17.3/meal (own figure) |
The spread is positioning, not error. Tayb runs a high-volume mess model: delivery Monday to Saturday, its own stated cost of AED 5–8 a meal, Sunday lunch add-on AED 30 (lunch and dinner, AED 50). Ghar ki Thali sells a different product — pure vegetarian, palm-oil-free, home-style — at AED 17.3 a meal by its own arithmetic. Any line that says “a tiffin costs AED X in Dubai” without the provider’s name attached is wrong.
Guides that quote a “typical” Dubai tiffin price sit above the published market. One business-setup guide puts typical lunch-only tiffin at AED 350–450 a month and lunch-plus-dinner at AED 600–700 — above Tayb’s and MealsKart’s actual published prices for the same thing (199 and 250 for one meal; 359 and 350 for two). Its “typical” single meal — veg AED 15–18, non-veg AED 18–25 — cannot be reconciled with Tayb’s own AED 5–8 a meal at all. The guide describes a market; the providers publish prices.
What does mithai and a samosa cost in Dubai?
At a named chain, boxed mithai runs AED 150–205 a kilo, and a fresh samosa costs AED 5.33. The famous AED 1 samosa could not be verified for 2026 anywhere — no named source prices a single street-cafeteria samosa this year — so it is not quoted as a current price.
The mithai evidence comes from one chain, Puranmal, whose platform listings (Deliveroo, crawled 23 October 2026) sell mithai in 500 g gift boxes; per-kilo figures are the box price doubled:

| Sweet — Puranmal, 500 g gift box | Branch prices (AED) | Per kg |
|---|---|---|
| Kaju Katli (fancy box) | 97 – 102.50 | AED 194–205 |
| Badam Barfi (fancy box) | 102.50 (Al Quoz) | AED 205 |
| Pista Barfi (fancy box) | 102.50 (Al Quoz) | AED 205 |
| Special Milk Cake (fancy box) | 80 – 97 | AED 160–194 |
| Deluxe Mix Sweets (fancy box) | 90 – 92 | AED 180–184 |
| Normal Mix Sweets (fancy box) | 75 – 84.50 | AED 150–169 |
Three cautions ride on these numbers. They are gift-box prices — packaging inside the price — and loose counter mithai at the same chain is published nowhere retrieved, so no counter price is quoted. Prices move by branch: the same Kaju Katli box is AED 97 at Discovery Gardens and Gold Souk, AED 102.50 at Al Quoz. And they come from one chain only: Bikanervala, the other big mithai name, returned no priced mithai lines on the Dubai platform listings retrieved — its listings lead with namkeen and cookies — so Puranmal’s prices are not borrowed for it. A gap in the evidence, stated as one.
The samosa ladder, stated honestly: a fresh samosa at Puranmal is AED 32 for six on Deliveroo — AED 5.33 each (a platform price). At a café — ROAST in Deira, on its own site — a samosa is AED 18. The nearest dated street evidence is a 2022 Gulf News feature on a Sharjah cafeteria where no menu item cost more than AED 6 — colour from 2022, not a 2026 price. One trap: a “Masaledar Samosa” 200 g pack at AED 11 on a platform listing is a shelf-stable namkeen snack, not a fresh samosa — not a samosa price. Beside the mithai counter the priced sweets are smaller: jalebi with rabri AED 18 at The Bhukkad Cafe, Karama (Deliveroo); Puranmal’s jalebi combos AED 24; carrot halwa AED 13.
Tiffin, eating out or cooking at home — which is cheapest?
Cooking at home is the cheapest way to eat desi in Dubai — a month’s staples core for one person is AED 209 — but read the scopes before the numbers: a one-meal tiffin starts lower (AED 199) and buys far less food, and eating out twice a day runs AED 900–2,400. The full comparison for one person:
| Option (one person) | AED/month | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Tiffin, 1 meal/day — Tayb Meals | 199 | Published plan, Mon–Sat |
| Home cooking — staples core | 209 | Groceries research — ministry platform lows |
| Tiffin, 2 meals/day — MealsKart | 350 | Published plan |
| Tiffin, 2 meals/day — Tayb Meals | 359 | Published plan, ≈52 meals |
| Eating out, 1 meal/day — cafeteria band | 450–1,200 | 30 meals × AED 15–40 |
| Tiffin, 2 meals/day — Ghar ki Thali | 899 | Published plan, 52 meals stated |
| Eating out, 2 meals/day — cafeteria band | 900–2,400 | 60 meals × AED 15–40 |

The ratios tell the story. Tayb’s two-meal tiffin is 1.7× the home staples core; eating out twice a day at cafeterias is 4.3–11.5× it. Ghar ki Thali’s two-meal plan (AED 899) lands almost exactly on the bottom of the eat-out band (AED 900) — the premium tiffin costs what the cheapest restaurant habit costs. One week of cafeteria lunches and dinners — 14 meals at AED 15–40 = AED 210–560 — costs roughly what a whole month of Tayb’s two-meal tiffin costs (AED 359), at the band’s middle. The band itself checks out against a menu: two meals a day at Ravi’s prices (AED 16 a meal) would run AED 960 a month, inside its lower half.
The treats price themselves against the defaults: one Gazebo dinner for two (AED 154) is about 13 days of a Tayb tiffin; one Trèsind Studio tasting (AED 1,095) is 5.2 months of the home staples core, or 3.1 months of Tayb’s two-meal plan.
Now the seams — the three options do not cover the same month. The tiffin plans above run Monday to Saturday and exclude breakfast; Sundays cost extra. The home figure is a staples core only — rice, flour, lentils, chickpeas, beans, sugar, oil, milk, eggs, whole chicken, bread and yoghurt at the ministry platform’s lowest recorded prices, priced item by item in our groceries in Dubai guide — excluding fresh produce, red meat, tea and spices, for which no consistent October 2026 prices exist. A real home food bill lands above AED 209. The eat-out band assumes every meal is bought. In our cost of living in Dubai budgets, the food line for one person sits at AED 900–1,200 a month — where a mix of cooking, a tiffin and the odd cafeteria meal actually lands.
